Oh, Barry Smitherman.
Who the hell is Barry Smitherman, you're probably asking? Well, he's currently a Texas Railroad Commissioner (in charge of regulating the oil and gas industry, despite the name) and a candidate for Attorney General of Texas. Mr. Smitherman proved once again that Republicans are incapable of articulating their beliefs about abortion without sounding like idiots:
In a recent speech to an anti-abortion group on the economic impact of terminating pregnancies, Texas Railroad Commissioner Barry Smitherman, a Republican candidate for attorney general, said he believed many unborn babies "would have voted Republican."Link
All the Republican bugaboos, rolled into one. In addition to being completely idiotic, Mr. Smitherman appears to be accusing Democrats of committing voter fraud by aborting future Republican voters. (Or I'm assuming that he thinks they're Democrats. After all, Republican women never have abortions in Barry Smitherman's world.)
But you think Mr. Smitherman stopped there?
Regarding the latter issue, which he suggested will "turn out badly for the Chinese," Smitherman observed that America was not much better off since it has settled for a low fertility rate that effectively amounts to "our own one-child policy."There you have it, folks. Not only are women terminating future Republican voters, but they're also hurting the economy by not having enough babies. Because that is all that women are for, after all.He touted the economic benefits to societies with high fertility rates and cautioned against heeding the warnings of overcrowding from "the same people that believe in global warming."
Smitherman and his wife have four children. "We're doing our part," he said. "But some people are not having enough children."
Seriously, this is why Democrats have a chance in Texas. Because the more Republicans talk about issues, the dumber they sound.
